How To Be Happy

I used to think that happiness was something that just magically enters our lives due to external factors. Like when we feel happy when receiving presents, helping someone out, meeting up with friends, and going on holidays, etc. This usually does make us happy for the short term but of course doesn't last as long as we would like.

We often get too caught up on money, accumulation of things, and achievement that we forget that all of that is meaningless if you aren’t happy within.

Happiness has to be internal. It is something you have to keep working towards and searching for in your life. You cannot sit back and wait for something to happen; you need to work on your own happiness daily to surround yourself with the things that make you feel joy in your heart.

Below I have created a basic guide on how to become happier. If you use these practices consistently, you are very likely to increase your personal happiness and start living a fulfilling life.

Happiness is turning a bad situation into a positive, learning experience:

There are many ways to be more positive and happy in your life, even when you’re experiencing sadness or anger.

We have powerful capabilities to choose positive emotions and ways of thinking which therefore creates a happier and joyful life. In fact, our emotions literally change our bodies on a cellular level. Many of our experiences in life are a result of how we interpret and respond to our surroundings.

Fortunately, rather than repressing or trying to “get rid” of negative feelings, we can choose to interpret and respond to them differently.

When you are faced with a difficult challenge or problem that is causing much stress and frustration, there is no use dwelling and complaining over it. Feeling sad about a problem isn’t going to help, you need to think of a way to get out of this slump you are in. Be open minded and ask yourself, how can I fix this problem I am experiencing? Once you think of a solution take immediate action.

I know times can be tough and you can feel like the world is crashing down but just remember that every hiccup you face in life you can always learn from it. The more problems we face and overcome, the stronger and smarter we get.

Happiness is doing what you love:

We get so caught up in work and life that we forget about our hobbies and doing what we love. We need to be setting time for ourselves to do these particular things that make us happy.

Now, let’s make this clear I am not talking about time wasting activities such as television; scrolling through Facebook and so on. I am talking about hobbies that are productive, that add value to your life, that you can learn from and be happy doing.

A hobby might include going to the gym, joining a sports team, reading, swimming, cooking, and anything else that you are passionate about.

Because of our busy schedules we unfortunately don’t make the time to do what we love, but this is no excuse. Even if it means waking up earlier to go and swim laps at the pool, If that is going to make you feel happy, refreshed and alert than that should be a part of your daily routine. No excuses.

You need to make the time to do what you love. If that means you need to sacrifice something, then that is what needs to be done. If you really look at what you do daily, I am sure you can find many time wasters. By making these small sacrifices and replacing it with something that is a productive hobby, it will ultimately make you feel happier.

Happiness is looking after yourself:

Eating the right nutritious foods can stabilize your mood, improve your focus, and boost your brain health, all while trimming your tummy.

We call this way of eating the Happiness Diet. Making sure you include the right amount of protein, carbohydrates and good fats that is going to nourish your body whilst giving you the essential energy to allow you to have a productive day without feeling tired or fatigued.

The Happiness Diet includes planning your meals and not eating takeaway. It includes fruits and plenty of green vegetables. It includes serotonin boosting foods such as: dark chocolate, nuts and seeds, fish, eggs, tofu, and pineapple just to name a few. If you are not sure what serotonin is- Serotonin is a hormone that has a wide variety of functions in the human body, including makeing you feel good. It is sometimes referred to as the happy hormone, because it contributes to wellbeing and happiness.

A right amount of rest and sleep is also very important for your overall health. They say that adults should be sleeping between 6-8 hours a night. For me 8 hours or more is essential. I know people who only sleep 6 hours a night and if they sleep any more than that they will feel lazy and even more tired than usual. So you should listen to your body and get the adequate sleep you need.

Happiness is taking on new challenges:

In life we will be faced ever so often with important decisions such as whether to take on a new challenge, like applying for a new job or starting a new training or educational course. Taking on such challenges is an important part of growing and developing as a person. The more we can test our limits and capabilities, the more we will learn about ourselves and what we want in this world.

When you are faced with a new challenge, don’t look at it as an extra burden on your life, look it as a learning experience or an opportunity that can lead to bigger and better things. Don’t be afraid of the challenge either. No matter the outcome you will either learn from it or grow from it.

This basic guide on how to live a happier and fulfilling life only scratches the surface. Although this guide might seem easy, it also can be very difficult for those who have developed bad habits over the past. Being happy and fulfilled is something you have to keep working for and searching in your life. It takes much time and practice.

By following this guide I hope you feel more uplifted and inspired to start working on yourself and start living a happier and fulfilling life like you deserve.
